ABSTRACT

History: We present a 15-year-old right hand dominant high school swimmer with no significant past medical history, who complains of right elbow pain along the distal biceps' tendon for a 2 months. Pain was insidious in onset, sharp, intermittent, and described as a 0 to 6 out of 10. The patient has been swimming more frequently over the last few months to prepare for competition and noticed progressive pain with swimming. He went on vacation and then was diagnosed with a COVID-19 infection and took an additional 2 weeks off due to fatigue. He returned to sport without re-integration and increased his swimming intensity to 1 to 2 hours daily, which worsened his pain. Performing the butterfly and breaststroke provoke symptoms and cessation of activity reduces the pain. Denies pain at rest. He took Advil which did not reduce his pain. Denies acute trauma, prior injuries, or paresthesias. Physical Exam: Inspection of right elbow: no swelling or signs of discoloration. Palpation: Tenderness at the distal biceps tendon but can hook the tendon without pain. No shoulder or wrist tenderness. Active Range of Motion: Elbow extension 0 degrees, elbow flexion 130 degrees, supination and pronation normal. Normal shoulder and wrist ROM. Muscle strength: 5/5 grip, wrist extension, and wrist flexion. Pain elicited with resisted elbow flexion at the distal humerus. Maneuvers: pain with distal humerus squeeze. Negative Maudsley and negative Cozen test. Differential Diagnosis: 36. Distal Biceps Tendonitis/Tear 37. Stress Reaction of the Distal Humerus 38. Medial Epicondyle Apophysitis 39. Capitellar Osteochondritis Dissecans 40. Radiocapitellar Plica Syndrome Test Results: x-ray right elbow: AP and Lateral views indicate no abnormalities to the bones, alignment, or soft tissue structures. MRI right elbow No IVCON: Biceps tendon intact. There is periosteal edema and endosteal aspect marrow edema along the medial aspect of the distal diaphysis and metaphysis of the humerus. Several small foci of increased cortical signal. No fractures, joint effusion, or chondral defects. Findings comparable to Fredrickson grade 4a distal humerus diametaphysis stress injury. Final Diagnosis: Right Elbow Supracondylar Grade 4a Stress Reaction. Discussion(s): Actives that involve repetitive motion are susceptible to overuse injuries. Cases of upper extremity stress reactions in swimmers have been documented along the inferior angle of the scapula, upper ribs, and olecranon. Stress reactions along the distal humerus in swimmers is not well documented. This pathology has been seen in baseball players, cricket bowlers, and tennis players. In swimming, the butterfly technique requires significant endurance and athletic strength. During a sprint, fast synchronized upper extremity revolutions occurring up to 60 cycles perminute counterforcewater surface area friction leading to excessive loading forces even at 50 meter distances. Outcome(s): The patient was withheld from upper body work outs and swimming for 6 weeks. VitaminDand Calcium levels were drawn revealing a normal calcium level (10.2), but a vitamin D level of 28.1. Patient was started on 600 IU of Vitamin D and 1300 mg of Calcium daily. The patient started a return to swim program and returned to full competition at 7 months post presentation. Follow-Up: At 6 weeks, started an upper extremity low impact non-aquatic physical therapy program. Then a slow progressive return to swimming was initiated at 50% effort for 4 weeks. At 10 weeks, a return to sport plan including 200 m all strokes except butterfly, progressed to 250 m at week 2, 300 m at week 3, and 350 m at week 4. Finally, initiated speed work in =0 to 100 m increments and elbow loading workouts.

ABSTRACT

By regarding the Chinese financial and economic sectors as a system, this article studies the stock volatility spillover in the system and explores its effects on the overall performance of the macroeconomy in China. The recent outbreak of COVID-19, U.S.-China trade friction, and three historical financial turbulences are involved to distinguish the changes in the spillover in these distinct crises, which has seldom been unveiled in the literature. By considering that the stock volatility spillover may vary over distinct timescales, the spillovers are disclosed through innovatively constructing the multi-scale spillover networks, followed by connectedness computation, based on variational mode decomposition (VMD) and generalized vector autoregression (GVAR) process. Our empirical analysis first demonstrates the different levels of increases in the total sectoral volatility spillover and changes in the roles of the sectors in the system under the aforementioned crises. Besides, the increases in the sectoral spillover in the long-term are verified to negatively impact the macroeconomy and can thereby act as warning signals.

ABSTRACT

Detrimental environmental repercussions have recently given rise to an interest in green investments. Although solar energy stocks are appealing assets for ethical investors, little is known about their dynamic correlations and linkages with metal (silicon, lithium, and rare earth) markets, particularly during economic events which is essential for hedging effectiveness and asset allocation. This study investigates the nexus between metal markets, oil price volatility (OVX), market sentiments (VIX), and solar energy markets using DCC, ADCC models, and the quantile regression approach. The results show both symmetric and asymmetric shock spillover between metals markets, VIX, OVX, and solar energy markets which are more prominent during COVID-19 pandemic, US-China trade frictions, and Russian invasion of Ukraine. For portfolio management, the hedging effectiveness of lithium stocks is highest, followed by silicon and rare earth metals. However, the hedge ratios are time-varying, and the variability is highest during US-China trade frictions. The quantile regression estimates reveal that lithium market is the most persistent determinant of solar energy stocks followed by silicon market even after segregating the periods into Paris Agreement and COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, lithium and silicon are driving markets of solar energy markets and can be a cause of omitted variable bias if stay unobserved. Nonetheless, there is little influence of VIX, rare earth metals, and OVX on solar energy stocks. Lastly, the estimations of threshold regression suggest that market sentiments change the association between metal markets and solar energy markets after the VIX reaches a certain threshold level. © 2023

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to address two major issues: (1) the spread of epidemics such as COVID-19 due to long waiting times caused by a large number of waiting for customers, and (2) excessive energy consumption resulting from the elevator patterns used by various customers. The first issue is addressed through the development of a mobile application, while the second issue is tackled by implementing two strategies: (1) determining optimal stopping strategies for elevators based on registered passengers and (2) assigning passengers to elevators in a way that minimizes the number of floors the elevators need to stop at. The mobile application serves as an input parameter for the optimization toolbox, which employs the exact method and multi-objective variable neighborhood strategy adaptive search (M-VaNSAS) to find the optimal plan for passenger assignment and elevator scheduling. The proposed method, which adopts an even-odd floor strategy, outperforms the currently practiced procedure and leads to a 42.44% reduction in waiting time and a 29.61% reduction in energy consumption. Computational results confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

ABSTRACT

The 23rd International Colloquium Tribology in January 2022 was held for the first time as an online conference only, with about 300 participants. The organising team, speakers and participants therefore made the best of this traditional event in Germany in view of the Covid-19 pandemic, even though the "online conference is not a substitute for a conference on site”, as one participant stated aptly. In almost 140 talks, 8 of which were plenary talks, new findings were reported on the topics of lubricants and additives, measuring techniques, digitalisation, coatings and surfaces, transport and industry, and sustainability. Several presentations were dedicated to the EU project "i-Tribomat”, which will soon be launched as "The European Tribology Centre” that offers services for the tribological characterisation of materials and lubricants.

ABSTRACT

The 2020-2021 period, characterised by the COVID19 pandemic and consequently by social closures and distancing, had a strong psychological impact on the population and threatened the development of evolutionary processes. One of the most vulnerable age ranges with the greatest intra- and interpersonal implications lies between 18 and 29 years old, the so-called emerging adulthood: during the pandemic, the demand for psychological help from young people was overwhelming. For this phase, group psychotherapy appears to be particularly indicated (Gatto Rotondo et al.2020), and for patients facing evolutionary crossings (Budman and Gurman, 1988;Di Blasi, Di Falco, 2011) such as the transition from adolescence to adulthood, the most suitable device is the fixed term one. Furthermore, although more slowly than in presence groups, the development of cohesion appears to be possible in online groups (Weinberg, 2021), a modality that has supported psychological care work in particular in recent years. The aim of the present study is to qualitatively compare the therapeutic process of two psychoanalytically oriented groups of young adults: one in presence with 6 patients, in a private psychoteraphist office, and the other one in online mode, with 8 patients, at the Psychological Assistance for Students-Psychological Consultation (SAP-CP) at the University Center for Psychological Clinical Services of the University of Padova. Both groups are fixed-term, weekly, the first of 41 sessions, the second of 29 sessions, and are co-led (the online one was also attended by an observer). The patients' problems are related to disorders in the affective and relational sphere (e.g. in the family, with the partner, with peers). The comparison starts from the data collected with the Group Questionnaire - GQ (Krogel et al., 2013), an instrument that assesses the therapeutic relationship in the group through a three-factor model: Positive Bonding (sense of belonging or attraction that a member has towards the group, the members, and the leader(s), which creates a positive atmosphere and allows members to feel truly understood and appreciated), Working Relationship (ability of the group to agree and work effectively towards therapy goals) and Negative Relationship (lack of trust, sincerity and understanding, friction and distance that may exist in the group, between members, or with the leader). The instrument was administered at three points: at the start of the group, in the middle and at the end of the process. The reflections on the development of the therapeutic process examined in particular Positive Bonding and Negative Relationship and were enriched by the clinical material consisting of session transcripts. In the in-presence group, the Positive Bonding and Negative Relationship scores are in the normal range and increase in the therapeutic process, suggesting that the sense of belonging or attraction that a member has towards the group, if it remains within certain limits, can favour the explication and circulation of experiences of friction and distance between members and towards the conductors, maintaining trust towards the device and the group's ability to work on shared therapeutic objectives. In the online group, Positive Bonding scores are higher than the cutoff, Negative Relationship scores are lower, suggesting a greater sense of belonging and bonding, and a lower sense of distrust and distance between members and the leader, but at the same time a greater difficulty in circulating experiences of friction and distance. The results show that both group therapies with young adults, inpresence and online, can be effective, and the analysis of Positive Bonding and Negative Relationship suggests that the two devices have certain characteristics that differentiate them and that should be kept in mind when conducting group psychotherapy and interpreting the therapeutic process. However, analysis of the therapeutic process of other groups, both in-presence and online, is suggested for stronger evidence.

ABSTRACT

Human skin is continually exposed to internal and external forces, dynamic as well as static. The skin is normally flexible and can resist mechanical trauma due to friction, pressure, vibration, suction and laceration to a considerable degree. However, an excess of these forces can abnormally affect the structure and function of the skin, setting the stage for the development of a skin disorder. Repetitive trauma can cause lichenification, hyperpigmentation, erythema, scaling, fissuring, blisters, ulceration and chronic alterations. Frictional dermatoses is an under-recognised entity with no clear-cut definition and encompasses a variety of terms such as frictional dermatitis, frictional melanosis, frictional pigmentary dermatoses and certain other named entities, many of which are confusing. The authors propose to define frictional dermatoses as 'a group of disorders caused by repetitive trauma to the skin as a result of friction of varied aetiology which can have a wide range of cutaneous manifestations depending on the type of insult.' The exact prevalence of frictional dermatoses as a separate entity is unknown. Authors who conducted this review include a group of dermatologists and post graduate students from various institutions. Literature was reviewed through PubMed, Medscape, Medline, ResearchGate and Google Scholar using the terms 'frictional dermatitis,' 'friction and skin,' 'dermatoses and culture,' 'clothing dermatitis,' 'friction melanosis,' 'PPE induced dermatoses in COVID-19 era,' etc. A total of 122 articles were reviewed and 100 articles among them were shortlisted and included in the study, after removing duplications. The review was followed up with further deliberation which resulted in the formulation of a new definition and classification of frictional dermatoses taking into account the morphology, histopathological characteristics, anatomical region affected and the major predisposing factors. The rising incidence of mechanical dermatoses in the COVID-19 era was also emphasised.

ABSTRACT

The agricultural futures market plays an extremely important role in price discovery, hedging risks, integrating agricultural markets and promoting agricultural economic growth. China is the largest apple producer and consumer in the world. In 2017, Chinese apple futures were listed on the Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange (CZCE) as the first fruit futures contract globally. This paper aims to study the efficiency of the apple futures market by using the Wild Bootstrapping Variance Ratio model to estimate the price discovery function, the ARIMA-GARCH model to estimate the risk-hedging function, and the ARDL-ECM model to estimate the cointegration relationship of the futures and spot market. Experimental results firstly demonstrate that the apple futures market conforms to the weak-form efficiency, which indicates that it is efficient in price discovery. Secondly, the apple futures market is not of semi-strong efficiency because it generated abnormal profit margins amid China–US trade friction, climate disaster, and COVID-19;in terms of the degree of impact, the COVID-19 pandemic had the greatest impact, followed by the rainstorm disaster and trade friction. Thirdly, the results of this study indicate that the cointegration relationships exist between the futures market and the spot markets of the main producing areas. This paper is not only conducive to sustainable development of the global fresh or fruit futures market, but also has potential and practical importance for China in developing the agricultural futures market, strengthening market risk management and promoting market circulation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND:  Pericarditis is an inflammatory pericardial disorder that can be caused by several infectious and non-infectious illnesses. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was recently added to the long list of pericarditis causes. As a result, this study aims to look at the incidence of various etiologies of pericarditis, including post-COVID-19 vaccine and risk factors, at King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. METHODS:  Between 2012 and 2022, all male and female patients diagnosed with acute, chronic, or constrictive pericarditis at the King Abdulaziz University Hospital clinic were included in this retrospective study, which took place in June 2022. Data were collected from the hospital's medical records, including the patient's demographic information, pericarditis history, medical history, social background, laboratory tests, Echocardiogram (ECHO) and electrocardiogram (ECG) readings, and medication history. Associations were tested using univariate and bivariate analysis. RESULTS:  Acute pericarditis was diagnosed in 59 (89.1%) patients and the most common symptoms were chest pain and shortness of breath (SOB) followed by fever and cough.Idiopathic pericarditis was the primary etiology 30 (46.9%) with male predominance 25 (55.6%), followed by infections and then cardiac presenting primarily with chest pain 25 (83.3%). In comparison, the most common presentation in females was autoimmune, as seen in eight patients (42.1%). Most patients required aspirin, ibuprofen, and colchicine. Among outcomes, of a total of 64 patients, five died within 30 days. Moreover, four (7.5%) experienced subsequent cardiac tamponades, which was mainly due to malignancy (50%) (p<0.05). CONCLUSION:  There was a substantial relationship between malignancy and developing morbid complications, with 59 patients out of 64 getting acute pericarditis and the remainder chronic and constrictive pericarditis with idiopathic pericarditis being the leading causes.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic adversely impacted economic activity, decreased corporate revenues, and magnified cash flow fluctuations. We study how Chinese listed firms' COVID exposure influences their cash holdings. A firm's COVID exposure is measured by its excess stock return responses to globally newly infected cases while controlling for market return. Firms increase (decrease) cash balances when their stock returns fall (increase) with COVID severity due to precautionary motives. Firms cannot predict the evolution of the pandemic, which impacts demand and supply and the cash conversion cycle. The deteriorating business condition also increases external financing costs with non-state-owned, low-growth, small, and firms without overseas businesses facing higher financial frictions. Furthermore, firms with good corporate governance tend to pre-empt operational uncertainty by increasing cash holdings. The increased cash holdings translate to more R&D expenditure but lesser capital investment. Our results remain robust to placebo tests, using excess cash and alternative COVID exposure measures.

ABSTRACT

This essay takes up Anna Tsing's idea of eclectic collaboration as a corrective to Western naturalist practices which divorce knowledge from its developmental contexts. Pedagogical practices informed by collaboration open the door to voices traditionally excluded from or underrepresented in both Victorian studies and the environmental humanities, allow students to see themselves as necessary to the collaborative process of knowledge formation, and recognize each collaborative agent's positionality and its influence on their perspective. In this essay, I explain what Tsing's idea of eclectic collaboration can offer for studies of the nineteenth century, and provide three examples of collaborative practices within the Victorian Ecologies classroom.

ABSTRACT

Presently, the public's perception of risk in terms of topical social issues is mainly measured quantitively using a psychological scale, but this approach is not accurate enough for everyday data. In this paper, we explored the ways in which public risk perception can be more accurately predicted in the era of big data. We obtained internal characteristics and external environment predictor variables through a literature review, and then built our prediction model using the machine learning of a BP neural network via three steps: the calculation of the node number of the implication level, a performance test of the BP neural network, and the computation of the weight of every input node. Taking the public risk perception of the Sino-US trade friction and the COVID-19 pandemic in China as research cases, we found that, according to our tests, the node number of the implication level was 15 in terms of the Sino-US trade friction and 14 in terms of the COVID-19 pandemic. Following this, machine learning was conducted, through which we found that the R2 of the BP neural network prediction model was 0.88651 and 0.87125, respectively, for the two cases, which accurately predicted the public's risk perception of the data on a certain day, and simultaneously obtained the weight of every predictor variable in each case. In this paper, we provide comments and suggestions for building a model to predict the public's perception of topical issues.

ABSTRACT

In this pandemic times, faced with a variant of coronavirus called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (sars cov2), we face a conjuncture of dilemmas and hypotheses about the causes of transmission of the microorganism when approved guideline for cleaning and disinfection in the hospital environment are not enough to consider a suitable surface, was in part to the lack of quantitative evidence that allow us to support or detract the effect of a disinfectant due to its misuse or wrong application. objective. to determine the effectiveness of four disinfectants applied with local cleaning and disinfection standards in the hospital environment. material and methods. observational study carried out in four hospitalization areas of two different health care centers. Cleaning and/or disinfection is carried out with three methods: spraying, friction and electromagnetic. Luminescence-based atp was used to quantify living cells results. friction on surfaces with hydrogen peroxide impregnated towels had a decrease up to 88% in relative light units (rlu) compared to spraying with other disinfectants. In rooms with previous cleaning, with spraying, the rlu had a 50% reduction, however, in sink faucets and dispensers, the simple use of nebulization was enough to reduce rlus more than 90%. Anesthesia equipment in three rooms, had the highest amount of organic material (bacteria, viruses, etc.) and the spraying reduced the rlus more than 95%.

ABSTRACT

Purpose>This research aims to focus on developing a customized support surface using additive manufacturing (AM) for effective pressure relief for patients who are in bed or wheelchair suffering from pressure ulcers (PU).Design/methodology/approach>A novel customized support surface is developed using AM technology incorporated with magnetic levitation and ball and socket mechanisms. Magnetic levitation provides cushioning effect for the developed cushion to users who are sitting in a wheelchair and increases the rate of healing. The ball and socket mechanism provides the user body's self-adaptive mechanism and reduces shear and friction forces between the surfaces of the additive manufactured cushion and the human buttocks.Findings>From the results of ISO 16480-6 biomechanical standardized tests, the additive manufactured support surface performed better than, or on par with, the most widely available commercial cushions. It is evident that the developed cushion’s peak pressure values are lower when compared with other cushions. The overall efficiency of the developed cushion was qualitatively reported;67% of people felt it was excellent and 22% of people responded as good and 11% were satisfactory. Henceforth, the overall effectiveness of the developed support surface provides a better experience to the end-user in the view of PU reduction.Originality/value>A developed additive manufactured customized support surface will be an alternative approach for the reduction of PU, and it overcomes the drawbacks faced by the currently available cushions.

ABSTRACT

Short-term profit-making goals and neoclassical understandings of historic and current economics encourage a particular friction between business leaders and their human and ecological resources, a friction which has historically resulted in business leaders being incentivized or influenced towards the exploitation of those resources. However, some of today's business leaders have discovered that this issue is reduced when business goals are oriented toward long-term performance, such as is deemed necessary for commercial success in twenty-first century markets. Ethical, sustainable, and values-based leadership practices are essential for such long-term performance. These frameworks are more closely aligned to the law and political economy view than to neoclassical economics frameworks. Additionally, leadership styles that demonstrate ethical, sustainable, and values-based practices arc strongly associated with development of emotional-social intelligence, a body of skills that can be intentionally developed through mindfulness practices. As this paper is being written, the world is navigating a phenomenon that may be a defining event of the decade, the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of hair loss has increased during COVID-19. In this study, we review the current literature on incidence and characteristics of various types of COVID-19-related and COVID-19-vaccine- related hair loss including telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, friction alopecia and anagen effluvium. Regarding most of them, the more severe the infection, the more profound and prolonged the course of alopecia. However, the most important issue is reassuring the patients of the non-serious nature of this complication, since psychological support is the most important factor in the earlier resolution of the condition.

ABSTRACT

This article examines the Google Trends data related to the second COVID-19 wave in India. We investigate the phenomenon of cyberchondria, which potentially causes individuals to avoid getting tested and quarantined directly upon experiencing symptoms for fear of losing their salaries or jobs. We utilize Google Trends data to predict future disease statistics, like the pandemic's impact on human activities and health-related issues in India. By means of a bootstrapped Pearson correlation, a time-lead correlation, and a quantile regression, we found a strong relationship between Google Trend searches and COVID-19 cases. Contextualizing the second COVID-19 wave in India through the lenses of cyberchondria and protection motivation theory, our article notes that, when people develop COVID-19 symptoms, they turn to Google for confirmation and treatment, rather than getting themselves checked early, only getting medically tested, and treated when their health deteriorates. At that stage, given the patients’critical conditions, hospitalization is the only option. This places an unsustainable burden on hospitals, resulting in capacity constraints and increased mortality rates. We suggest using Google Trends data to forecast COVID-19 waves and mobilize the health infrastructure to save lives and facilitate friction-free growth. IEEE

ABSTRACT

In this review, we summarize existing trends of flow control used to improve the aerodynamic efficiency of wings. We first discuss active methods to control turbulence, starting with flat-plate geometries and building towards the more complicated flow around wings. Then, we discuss active approaches to control separation, a crucial aspect towards achieving a high aerodynamic efficiency. Furthermore, we highlight methods relying on turbulence simulation, and discuss various levels of modeling. Finally, we thoroughly revise data-driven methods and their application to flow control, and focus on deep reinforcement learning (DRL). We conclude that this methodology has the potential to discover novel control strategies in complex turbulent flows of aerodynamic relevance.

ABSTRACT

Global connections are an important part of the elementary classroom as they help students develop empathy through interactions while allowing them to apply classroom learning to the outside world. Partnering with a classroom in another country was a goal of Pace because through interactions and sharing of information, she hoped to create curiosity while helping her students build a global mindset in which they see how the concepts they are learning in class can be applied in different settings. Within a given classroom, students come with a variety of experiences they can build upon. For example, in her classroom she has students who have traveled around the US and some who have never left their city. By providing a collaborative experience, all of her students would have the chance to go beyond the four walls of their classroom and experience a new culture. As a teacher, she was excited to exchange ideas and learn from her co-teacher in another country.
